Richard Essifie, a driver, who allegedly knocked down a 52-year-old pedestrian, was granted GH¢30,000 bail with three sureties by the Dansoman Circuit Court, in Accra.

Essifie, driving a Daewoo Matiz Taxi, was said to have knocked Francis Yaw Osei on the General Acheampong High Street, and the victim passed on while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Charged with careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm, Essifie pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, ordered that all the sureties, all of whom must live within the jurisdiction of the court, must be public servants earning not less than GH¢2,000.

Essifie was ordered to deposit his Ghana Card with the registry of the court and report to the police once every two weeks.

Prosecuting, Inspector Esther Mensah, said accused was driving his Daewoo Matiz Taxi from Dansoman Last stop towards the Kwame Nkrumah Circle along the General Acheampong High Street with two passengers on board.

According to the prosecution, on reaching a section of the road at Biggies Pub, Essifie not observing traffic regulations, knocked down Francis Osei, who was crossing the road.

Insp Mensah said Osei suffered injuries on the head, and he was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Accident and Emergency Ward for treatment, and died while on admission.

The body was deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The court adjourned the case to April 30.
