A Nigerian lawyer has sparked a debate online after advising married women to secure their future by purchasing properties in their own names.
According to her, people often overlook the financial vulnerabilities women face in marriage, especially in a society where polygamy, separation, and divorce happen.
She advised women to remain committed and positive in their marriages, while also making smart and independent financial decisions.
Adding that contributing to their husband’s personal projects, such as building a house, doesn’t guarantee loyalty or marital stability.
The lawyer concluded by saying her advise was specifically for women, and if a man chooses to add his wife’s name to his property, it’s entirely up to him. However, she maintained that women must not shy away from owning assets independently.
A part of her post read;
“Yes, be positive and give your marriage your best effort, but at the same time, make wise and logical decisions that protect you if things ever go wrong. If you support your husband’s projects, do it from a place of love and faith, not as a guarantee of loyalty. Contributing to building a house with a man won’t stop him from taking another wife, cheating, or even walking away if the marriage falls apart. A house is not what holds a marriage together.
Love is beautiful, but wisdom is necessary. Marriage is not a competition, you have every right to own property too. Help your marriage grow, but don’t neglect your own personal growth in the process.“
