President John Dramani Mahama has announced that all budgets for sporting events, including that of the Black Stars, will be made public under his government.

President Mahama assured that no association would withhold their budgets, emphasizing that taxpayers have the right to know how funds are allocated.

“There will be no secrecy on how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the GFA and other associations must be known by the public. After all, it’s the taxpayers’ funds that are used to fund these activities.

The reduction in government expenditure applies to all sectors of the economy, including the ministry of sports and recreation,” the president stated.

Budgets for tournaments and sporting events are often announced in advance. However, in recent years, budgets for the Black Stars specifically have been withheld until the end of a tournament.

In 2024, Ghana’s $8.5 million budget for the 2023 AFCON was only revealed during an expenditure report by former Minister of Sports Mustapha Ussif.

President Mahama’s address, which is in line with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution and which is expected to outline his ambitious “Resetting Ghana” agenda, aims at tackling economic challenges, creating jobs, and restoring stability.

In his address, the president is expected to touch on key areas of his government’s policy objectives.

He is also expected to provide updates on the state of Ghana’s economy, including the ongoing IMF bailout program, security, and the cost of living, among other issues.

Additionally, he will update Ghanaians on deliverables for the year ahead, as well as the achievements of his government so far and the challenges that lie ahead.
