On Sunday, May 19, 2025, a British national was detained by Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) personnel at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle a significant amount of cannabis into Ghana, marking a significant narcotics raid.

The suspect, whose identity has been kept secret for the time being, traveled from Thailand to Accra on Emirates aircraft EK 787 via Dubai. NACOC agents working at the airport found two luggage with 92 slabs of what appeared to be cannabis during a regular search.

The entire weight of the seized stuff was 53.60 kg, and a preliminary field test revealed that it contained cannabis.

Two accomplices who were thought to be assisting the foreign national were identified and arrested as a result of additional investigations conducted at the scene, officials said.

A porter and a customs officer who work in the airport’s Commercially Important Person (CIP) area are among the accused. It was stated that both people were helping the illegal goods pass past airport security.

Currently detained, all three suspects are helping NACOC with ongoing investigations into what officials believe to be a larger global drug trafficking network.

After investigations are complete, authorities anticipate charging the individuals in court.
