Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid have parted ways with Xabi Alonso as head coach after falling to Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana final in Saudi Arabia on Sunday night.

In a statement released on Monday via the club’s website, the 36-time La Liga winners confirmed that the parties have mutually parted ways.

Alonso, who spent five seasons at the Bernabeu as a manager, arrived as the replacement for Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.

However, a breakdown of his relationship with some of the club’s top stars especially Vini Jr. contributed significantly to the club’s patchy form in the 2025/26 season.

A club statement reads: “Real Madrid C. F. wishes to announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as first team coach to an end.

Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.”

He leaves the helm after surrendering the La Liga table leadership to sworn rivals Barcelona with a 4-point gap while losing top games after Atletico de Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
