A FEATURE FILM EXPOSING THE DARK REALITY OF 1950s BOXING AND THE CHAMPION WHO REFUSED TO BEND
Evergreen Pictures NY LLC announces the national development of BASILIO, a feature film based on the explosive true story of Carmen Basilio — the fighter who stood up to organized crime, defied the most powerful men in sports, and became one of the few champions of his era to earn a title shot without submitting to mob control.
In the 1950s, boxing wasn’t just a sport — it was a criminal enterprise.
James Norris’ International Boxing Club controlled the television contracts.
Organized crime controlled the fighters.
Together, they controlled the sport of boxing.
Title shots were routinely denied unless boxers agreed to mob management.
Many fighters signed.
Carmen Basilio refused.
He paid the price.
He was shut out.
He was held back.
He was punished for saying no.
But the public wouldn’t let him disappear — and neither would the boxing writers. Under mounting national pressure, the mob finally gave Basilio his chance, and he delivered one of the most unforgettable championship runs in boxing history.
BASILIO is based on THE BOOK: The Onion Picker: Carmen Basilio and Boxing in the 1950s, written by Gary B. Youmans, whose firsthand research and personal interviews exposed the corruption, the danger, and the fighter who refused to break.
The screenplay has been compared to the “Big Four” American boxing films — Rocky, Raging Bull, Cinderella Man, and The Fighter — for its authenticity, emotional depth, and commercial reach.
“Carmen Basilio was the real ‘Rocky,’” said Evergreen Pictures NY LLC President Gary B. Youmans. “He didn’t just fight opponents — he fought the mob, he fought the system, and he fought for every person who ever believed in him. His story is the true American story: grit, honesty, and the refusal to quit.”
BASILIO is currently in pre‑production, with Evergreen Pictures NY. LLC is preparing to hire national and regional crew and partners as the project moves toward full production.
