Sad to pass along the news that legendary three-weight Australian champion Tony Mundine passed away on Sunday from an apparent heart attack.
Mundine held the Australian titles at middleweight, light heavyweight and heavy weight in a career that spanned 15 years from March of 1969 to March of 1984. Mundine also held the commonwealth titles at middleweight And light heavyweight. He went 2-4 against the men who held World titles at one time or another. In 1974 he put up a gallant challenge against the legendary Carlos Monzon in the Champion’s home country of Argentina, suffering a TKO in the seventh round.
Mundine also lost to Luis Rodriguez, Murray Sutherland and Mate Parlov, while defeating Denny Moyer and Emile Griffith.
While never winning a world title himself, Mundine successfully trained his son Anthony “The Man” Mundine to the WBA super middleweight title.
