Botswana made history by winning the 4x400m relay final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on September 21, 2025.

They edged out strong competition from the United States and South Africa to become the first African country to claim gold in the event.

In challenging conditions, with heavy rain pouring down at the Japan National Stadium, the U.S., who had secured their place in the final after a run-off victory over Kenya, led the race at the final baton exchange.

However, Collen Kebinatshipi, the 21-year-old winner of the individual title, ran a phenomenal anchor leg to snatch gold in a time of 2:57.76.

Botswana finished with 2:57.76 to claim gold, the US followed with 2:57.83 to take silver, while South Africa also clocked 2:57.83 to secure the bronze medal.

The US, winners of nine of the last ten world titles, changed all four athletes for the final from their morning run-off.

Botswana and South Africa made Africa proud with their brilliant performances, earning well-deserved medals in the 4×400 relay.
