The Bono East Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer ll, (ACFO II), Rev Naomi Ofori-Adubea, of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned the general public to desist from acts of vandalism and assault on fire personnel, especially during fire-fighting operations.

She said GNFS personnel deserved the support and respect of the public to enable them to deliver on their mandate rather than attacks being visited on them in line of duty.

ACFO II Rev Ofori-Adubea made the call during a remembrance parade to mark this year’s International fire fighters Day in Techiman of the Bono East Region, yesterday. The solemn occasion, which was to remember fire fighters who died in course of duty, was on the theme: ‘Appreciating Our Heroes; Say No To Fire Fighters and Fire Truck Vandalism.’

The Bono East Regional Fire Commander stated that “unfortunately, these heroes often face unacceptable challenges. Assault on fire-fighters, fire truck vandalism and cutting of delivery hoses during firefighting, which goes on in some parts of the country are reprehensible acts that hinder the ability to deliver and serve our country, “she outlined.

She also commended personnel of the GNFS for their commitment and dedication to duty.

A retired fire officer, ACFO II Thomas Tuffour, in a solidarity message condemned attacks on fires fighters, and appealed to the government to resource the GNFS to enable personnel carry out their work efficiently.

Some senior officers, including the Regional Fire Commander symbolically laid a coin on behalf of all fallen heroes who died in the course of duty.

Awards were presented to some distinguished officers, who had worked tirelessly over the period.

As part of the International Fire Fighters Day (IFFD) celebration, the regional Fire Command undertook a week-long activities, including a flag-lowering ceremony in honour of fallen firefighters, groupings of personnel for mass fire prevention education in the markets, radio stations, restaurants and other public gathering with placards bearing the theme for the event: ‘Appreciation to our Heroes, Say no to Fire Fighter assault and Fire Track Vandalism.’

There were also a float, sporting event, and regional quiz competition, with Nkronza GNFS personnel wining the trophy.
