A high school was plunged into lockdown with students evacuated from the buildings.

Bonnyrigg High School, in western Sydney, evacuated students onto the oval shortly after 11am on Wednesday.

It’s understood the school was emailed a bomb threat.

‘Please be advised the school is currently being evacuated,’ an urgent message read on social media.

‘Please do not contact the school or your child. We will advise shortly.’

The school was cleared by NSW Police and resumed classes at 12.50pm.

A NSW Police spokesman said the lockdown had been initiated as a precautionary search was carried out on the campus.

More than 1,600 students are understood to be enrolled at the high school.

One guardian, Debbie, was told by the school the children were ‘all safe and don’t worry’.

‘I’m a bit worried,’ she said.

Police and fire crews attended the scene.

Officers were spotted inspecting the grounds with the assistance of the Dog Unit and a PolAir helicopter.

The school released a statement to parents shortly after 1.30pm.

‘As student safety and wellbeing are the school’s highest priorities, I need to give you the following information,’ Principal Hooke said.

‘At approximately 11.15am this morning, the school received information that required the activation of our evacuation plan and the calling of police.

‘All students and staff moved in an orderly way to the designated evacuation areas.

‘All students and staff were safe.’
