Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Nana Oduro Sarfo, has said that the Black Stars captaincy issues have not been handled well. .

He stated that the lack of a proper structure for the captaincy, leading to frequent changes over time, has generated unnecessary controversies that could have been avoided.

The GFA Exco member suggested that the controversies surrounding the Black Stars captaincy have contributed to the team’s poor performances, including their failure to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking in an interview with Connect FM, Oduro Sarfo expressed worry about the Black Stars‘ leadership crisis over the years.

“Captaincy issues have genuinely brought many bad times for the Black Stars. They are largely the decision of the coach, but I concur that it has been mismanaged throughout the years,” he said.

Recent reports indicate that head coach Otto Addo is set to announce Jordan Ayew as the substantive Black Stars captain, as Andre Dede Ayew’s future with the team remains uncertain ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

It was noted that Thomas Partey, who was deputy to Dede Ayew, rejected the same role when offered the opportunity to focus on his football.

The captaincy issue became a major problem for the team after Dede Ayew was left out of the Black Stars squad during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in 2024.
