Ghana's Black clinched a bronze medal at the 2025 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Ghana’s Black clinched a bronze medal at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)

Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on the sport sector to ensure that bonuses paid to the Black Queens is congruent to that of the Black Stars following their stellar performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Black Queens, who won the bronze title, made a remarkable comeback from a slow start to secure third place, defeating Algeria in the quarterfinals and then stunning defending champions South Africa in the third-place playoff.

In a passionate address to Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, called for fair bonuses for the Black Queens, emphasising the need for equal pay for both the male and female teams.

“Mr Speaker, we must ensure that our illustrious Black Queens receive equal pay, comparable to what the Black Stars earn. It’s time we uphold the Affirmative Action Act, which was passed by this very House.

“Fortunately, the sports minister is one of us, and we expect him to champion what is fair and just.

“The current disparity where the Black Stars receive significantly more than the Black Queens—is not only unjust but goes against the very principles of the Affirmative Action Act,” he said.

Several countries, like the US, Norway, Australia, Brazil, Wales, England, and Ireland, have already implemented equal pay in football, setting a precedent for others to follow.

The Black Queens got a hero’s welcome at Kotoka International Airport in Accra after winning bronze at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco.

Fans and officials greeted them with thunderous applause, chants, waving flags, and traditional drumming.

The players, who were clad in their Ghana jersey, proudly showed off their medals, with some of them looking visibly emotional about the warm reception.
