Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have been handed a challenging group following the final draw of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which was conducted yesterday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the draw procedure earlier in the day, with Ghana seeded in Pot 1 alongside hosts Morocco, defending champions, Nigeria, and South Africa, based on the FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on December 11, 2025.

The expanded tournament will feature 16 teams for the first time in WAFCON history, divided into four groups of four.

Ghana have been placed in Group D, where they will face Cameroon, Mali, and Cape Verde.

The group promises to be highly competitive, with Cameroon and Mali both boasting strong physical and tactical profiles, while Cape Verde continue to make rapid progress on the continental stage.

Hosts Morocco were automatically assigned to Group A, while Nigeria were fixed in Group C.

South Africa anchor Group B, leaving the Black Queens to complete the final seeding in Group D.

The tournament format will see the top two teams from each group progress to the knockout phase, starting from the quarter-finals.

The competition will also serve as part of the qualification pathway for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027, adding extra significance to every fixture.

With the draw now confirmed, attention turns to Ghana’s preparations as the Black Queens aim to make a deep run and reassert themselves among Africa’s elite women’s football nations.

Meanwhile, the Black Queens will be based in the historic city of Fes for the group stage of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following Thursday’s final draw conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

All Group D matches will be staged in Fes, providing Ghana with a single host city throughout the opening phase of the tournament.

Fes, one of Morocco’s oldest cities, is expected to offer a vibrant atmosphere during the competition, with fans anticipated to travel from across the country to support the participating teams.

The venue assigned to Group D will host some of the tournament’s most intriguing fixtures, as Ghana prepare to test themselves against experienced continental opponents.

With their base confirmed in Fes, the Black Queens will now shift focus to fine-tuning preparations, aiming to navigate a demanding group and make a strong statement on Africa’s biggest women’s football stage.
