Bill Belichick has added a familiar name to a critical position on his North Carolina coaching staff, his son Stephen Belichick, as his defensive coordinator.

The younger Belichick is currently Washington’s defensive coordinator and will make the move to Chapel Hill after the Huskies’ bowl game against Louisville on December 31.

The 72-year-old Belichick made the shocking move to college football earlier this month and will coach not in the NFL for the first time in his career.

Stephen worked under his father for 11 seasons with the New England Patriots, serving in four different roles on his dad’s defensive staff.

After Bill was let go by the Patriots, Stephen also moved on and began his single season in Washington.

There appears to be no agreement in place for Stephen to takeover as the Tar Heels head coach down the line when Bill retires or leaves the school as part of any contract.

The younger Belichick is Washington’s DC and will make the move to Chapel Hill in 2025

Stephen will again work under his father after many years together on New England’s staff

It is unknown if Brian Belichick, Stephen’s younger brother, will join them in Chapel Hill as well.

Brian has been the safeties coach for the Patriots since 2020 and stayed on staff after his father and older brother went elsewhere.

In his first season in charge of a defense, Stephen improved Washington’s defense from 99th in the FBS to No 26 in total defense.

More to come.
