Ghanaian sprint star Benjamin Azamati has withdrawn from the upcoming CAA African Senior Athletics Championships after suffering a groin injury, dealing a major blow to Ghana’s medal hopes ahead of the continental competition.

The championships, scheduled to take place from May 12 to 17, were expected to feature some of Africa’s top athletes, with Azamati among the headline names in the men’s sprint events. The Ghanaian record holder had been widely tipped as a strong contender for a podium finish following his impressive performances on the international circuit in recent seasons.

Azamati’s withdrawal comes as a disappointment for Ghanaian athletics fans and officials, who were hoping the sprinter would lead the country’s charge at the prestigious event. His absence is expected to leave a significant gap in Ghana’s sprint team, particularly in the 100m event where he has consistently established himself as one of Africa’s fastest men.

Medical officials are reportedly monitoring the athlete’s recovery, with attention now turning to ensuring he regains full fitness ahead of upcoming international competitions later in the year.

The injury setback also raises concerns about Ghana’s overall prospects at the championships.
