Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has applauded the Ghana Police Service for their high level of professionalism in handling protesters.

On Sunday 22nd September, clashes broke out between demonstrators from the Democracy Hub and officers of the Ghana Police Service at the 37 Intersection in Accra, leading to the arrest of scores of protesters, including their leaders.

The protestors are currently on bail after being arraigned before the court.

At the passing out ceremony of the 53rd officer cadet graduation course held at the National Police Training Centre, Tesano Accra, Dr. Bawumia praised the police service for proving a high level of competence in the profession.

“I commend the police administration for this high level of police professionalism. To all police officers of Ghana, I say you can be proud of yourselves and I am proud of you.”

The Vice President in comparing the previous police attitudes towards stubborn protestors who were met with extreme violence, batons, and whips, praised the police and guaranteed that the new police service maintains law and order without abusing protestors.

“Gone are the days when the police were the butt of everyone’s jokes for unprofessional conduct. I watched in amazement as the Ghana police service, under extreme provocation from recent demonstrators, maintained their discipline and professionalism. It was not so long ago we have long memories.

“Need I remind you Ghanaians that peaceful protesters were met with extreme brutality, with batons and whips. Today we have a new police service that we are all proud of. One that understands that maintaining law and order does not mean brutalizing its citizens.” He praised.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia assured that the police understand that providing security is a service for the citizens and a shared responsibility that must be done hand in hand with the community.
