At a meeting with the creative arts community on Wednesday, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), revealed a significant development in the Ghanaian music industry.

He announced that work on the country’s first local music streaming platform had been completed, a project aimed at improving revenue collection and distribution for Ghanaian artists.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the challenges Ghanaian musicians face with foreign-owned streaming platforms like Spotify, noting the limited financial returns artists receive.

“The payments that are made to our musicians are very little,” he said.

He emphasized the need for a local platform to host the extensive catalogue of Ghanaian music, which would ensure better tracking, collection, and distribution of royalties.

For years, stakeholders from MUSIGA, GHAMRO, music producers, and the IT and private sectors have been working on this initiative. According to Dr. Bawumia, their efforts have now come to fruition.

The platform, set to launch in November, is designed to empower Ghanaian content creators by providing better tools for managing revenue and expanding opportunities within the creative arts sector.

Dr. Bawumia assured the industry that the government would support the project, particularly in covering development costs, which would ensure its smooth rollout and long-term sustainability.

“I am very happy to let you know that the work has been completed,” he said.

This platform is expected to be a game-changer for musicians, film producers, and other content developers in Ghana, offering them a much-needed avenue to maximize revenue and enhance their global reach.
