A Basic 5 pupil of Falahiyat E/A Primary School in the Savannah Region has been hospitalised after he was allegedly flogged with a wire by his teacher.

According to multiple reports, the incident occurred after the pupil scored two out of eight in his homework.

He was among a group of students reportedly punished for their poor performance.

“A Basic Five pupil of Falahiyat E/A Primary School is receiving treatment at St. Anne Catholic Hospital in Damongo, in the Savannah Region, after an alleged assault by a teacher left him in critical condition,” a post by Channel One TV’s X on Monday, February 2, 2026, stated.

The teacher, only identified as Fatawu, allegedly instructed the affected pupils to lie on dual desks in the classroom before allegedly beating them on their backs and other parts of their bodies with a wire cane.

Speaking to Channel One TV on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the pupil’s father, Abdul Wahidu Mahama, stated, “My son tried to shield himself with his hand, but the teacher continued to beat him and verbally abused the children because of their low marks.”

After home treatment failed to ease the child’s pain, the family took him to Damongo St Anne’s Catholic Hospital, where he was admitted.

Doctors later recommended surgery, which was performed on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, after the child had been placed on medication.

Mahama alleged that the teacher has not visited the child in the hospital since the incident.

He added that the teacher only came to the family’s home on Sunday, January 25, 2026, after the child’s mother reached out.

The father has appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant stakeholders to intervene and ensure justice is served.
