Activist and lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has applauded the court’s decision to strike out a defamation suit filed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Ransford Abbey, against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

In a post shared on his X page on Thursday, January 22, 2026, Barker-Vormawor described the decision by Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Baasit as “very correct,” noting that the suit was improperly filed using the legal department of COCOBOD.

He argued that since defamation is a personal cause of action, it was wrong for a public institution and its resources to be used to pursue what he described as a personal grievance.

“I applaud the decision. Further, I think it is proper that Ransford Abbey be personally surcharged for the expenses, time, and cost of legal resources of the institution,” he wrote.

Vormawor further suggested that Dr Abbey ought to render a personal apology over the issue.

“This should be done at commercial rate. I also think Ransford should apologise personally for this!” the post said.

The defamation suit, filed on August 26, 2025, was struck out on Monday, January 19, 2026, after the court upheld a preliminary objection challenging the procedure used to commence the action.

In her ruling, Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Baasit held that both the writ of summons and the statement of claim were procedurally defective, rendering the suit incompetent.

According to the judge, defamation is a personal action aimed at protecting an individual’s reputation and must therefore be brought strictly in the individual’s own name and capacity, not through a public institution.

I have seen the very correct decision by Justice Halima Abdul Baasit, dismissing the defamation suit filed by Randy Abbey, because he used the legal department of COCOBOD to file the suit.
