Former Ballon d’Or winner and ex-Liberian president, George Weah, surprised fans in Accra when he was spotted playing football at Bawaleshie Park on Monday, June 30, 2025.

The 57-year-old legend, who remains Africa’s only Ballon d’Or winner, joined local players for a friendly football game at the popular community pitch, drawing a crowd of excited onlookers.

Weah, who starred for top European clubs like AC Milan, PSG, and Chelsea during his playing days, showed flashes of his old brilliance as he dribbled past opponents and linked up with other players on the dusty field.

At one point, he came close to scoring what would have been a memorable goal, but his effort was cleared off the line. He also spent time interacting with fans and posing for photos after the match.

The game has since gone viral on social media, with many praising the Liberian icon for staying close to the grassroots game and inspiring young footballers in Ghana and beyond.

George Weah served as Liberia’s president from 2018 until 2024 but has always stayed connected to the sport that made him a global star.

His brief appearance at Bawaleshie Park serves as a poignant reminder of his enduring love for football and his unique place in African sports history.
