A boxing event organised by Ayitey Powers Promotions drew a large crowd in Winneba during this year’s Aboakyir Festival, as fans gathered for the Aboakyir Fight Night held at the Winneba Sports College on Friday, May 1.
The evening featured a series of exciting bouts that kept spectators engaged, with many experiencing live boxing for the first time. Organizer Ayitey Powers admitted there were initial challenges in putting the event together but said they were eventually resolved. He also revealed that the show was free, allowing residents to enjoy the action without paying.
According to him, the initiative was aimed at promoting boxing as a leading sport in Ghana while providing entertainment during the festival celebrations. He further disclosed that he is yet to receive compensation from the National Sports Authority after a previous arrangement was cancelled.
In the headline bout, Nigeria’s Samuel Opaogun lost to Benin’s Imorou Hanri Tadja Wali in their contest for the vacant WBA Africa welterweight title. Meanwhile, WBO Africa super lightweight champion Faisal Abubakar secured victory and reiterated his ambition of pursuing a world title.
Officials of the Ghana Boxing Authority and fans praised the event’s organization and impact.
