Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has stated that his decision to contest the Ayawaso East National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary is motivated by a desire to serve the people, rather than personal ambition.

Baba Jamal is among six aspirants who have picked nomination forms to contest the party’s primary ahead of the March 3 by-election, which follows the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.

Speaking to journalists after filing his nomination, the former Deputy Minister appealed to party delegates to assess his track record, experience and capacity to deliver meaningful development to the constituency.

“Tomorrow, there will be vetting for all the candidates who have presented their documents. Those who continue to ask why Baba Jamal is coming back and leaving Nigeria as a High Commissioner to take the title of Honourable — let me make it clear, my motivation is to serve, not materialistic; it is humanism and service to the people,” he said.

He explained that his decision to return home to contest the primary was based on a sense of duty to his constituents and the nation.

“I believe that my service here will be more useful to my people and also to the nation, even more than my service in Nigeria, not because I don’t regard my position in Nigeria. I hold it in high esteem. When duty calls where you are needed more, you need to respond to it,” Baba Jamal added.

The High Commissioner will contest the NDC parliamentary ticket against Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Ayawaso East MP, as well as four other aspirants, as the party prepares for the crucial by-election scheduled for March 3.
