Disturbing footage captured the squalor found inside a home where a man with Down Syndrome was found dead as his half-sister is charged with murder.

Isaac ‘Ike’ Oar, 56, was pronounced dead at an Alice Street address in Ayr, south of Townsville in Queensland, on August 10, 2023.

Queensland Police revealed afterwards that Mr Oar weighed just 29kgs.

Following a ‘complex’ three-year investigation, his half-sister Maria Concepceion Arrieta, 70, was arrested by police on Tuesday.

Arrieta, who lives in Forest Lake in Brisbane‘s south-west, was charged with one count of murder (domestic violence) and was remanded into custody.

Bodycam footage showed the moment police visited the Ayr home, with the inside of the property seen to be in complete disarray.

Officers were forced to walk through narrow ravines, with cardboard boxes and various miscellaneous piled on either side.

Furniture was completely hidden by clothes and discarded containers.

During a brief hearing at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday, the court heard Arrieta currently works as a disability support worker.

Her lawyer, Mathai Joshi from Connolly Suthers Lawyers, requested the matter be transferred for mention at Townsville Magistrates Court on August 7.

A brief of evidence was also ordered to be disclosed to the defence by September 30.

It comes as Queensland Police said investigations into Mr Oar’s death had ‘been complex, with detectives conducting extensive and thorough inquiries into his health, care, and treatment throughout his life.’

‘He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Due to the circumstances, police commenced an investigation, and a crime scene was established,’ police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Queensland Police alleged Mr Oar’s condition stemmed from years of neglect and named his primary caregiver, his older sister, as a person of interest in their investigation.

‘Isaac was found seriously malnourished – he was only 29kgs at the time of his death,’ Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd told reporters in 2025.

‘He was being cared for by a family member.

‘He hadn’t received any professional medical treatment in well over a decade so it makes the investigation quite complex.

‘We do believe people would have had contact with the family members, would have had contact with the house at times during the years preceding his death, and we believe that those people may be able to assist us.’

Mr Oar was non-verbal and had been on the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
