Former Ghana international Augustine Ahinful has backed Desmond Ofei to succeed despite the Black Satellites’ failure to qualify for the U-20 World Cup.

Ghana, after a strong start in the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, was eliminated by host nation Egypt in the quarterfinals on Monday at the New Suez Stadium.

The Black Satellites needed a win to secure qualification for the U-20 World Cup, which will be hosted in Chile later this year, but lost 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2 following 120 minutes of action.

Despite failing to achieve their objective, Ahinful has expressed his support for Ofei, stating that he hopes the head coach will be given the time and backing needed to correct past mistakes.

“Everybody wants Desmond Ofei to succeed,” he told Asempa FM.

“He has started well, and I have met him a couple of times at the Black Stars camp. I believe he will get the time to make things right.

“I haven’t had the chance to engage him personally, but let’s hope he stays focused and does the right things,” he added.

The last time the Black Satellites featured in the U-20 World Cup was in 2015.
