The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has filed a defamation suit against three individuals for allegedly making false allegations of illegal mining against him.

A copy of the writ of summons issued by the High Court at Adentan and sighted by GhanaWeb on Facebook shows that the regional minister is seeking, among other things, GH¢10 million in damages from the defendants: Wendell Yeboah, Aluta FM, and Agyaba Owusu.

In the suit, filed on December 4, 2025, Dr Amoakohene, the plaintiff, argued that the allegations made by the defendants were done with malice, implying that he is engaged in criminal activity.

The minister also stated that the claims have caused injury to his reputation.

“… The Plaintiff says that illegal mining is an offence in Ghana, and the defamatory statements made by the Defendants against him as particularized at paragraph 10 above and republished at paragraph 11 was made with malice to intentionally suggest to right-thinking members of the society that he is a criminal and hence cause injury to his hard-earned reputation.

“… The Plaintiff avers that the said defamatory statements were wholly false, malicious, reckless, and intentionally calculated to cause severe reputational damage to him… the Plaintiff avers that the defamatory statements made by the Defendants have caused public ridicule, emotional distress, professional and social embarrassment, and extreme injury to his reputation,” portions of the suit read.

The minister is also seeking a declaration from the court that the allegations are defamatory, along with a retraction and apology, general damages, and other relief.

The minister’s reliefs are as follows:

    a. A declaration that the following words “Alright, mene wo kasa sesie, the Ashanti Regional Minister is into Galamsey”, to wit “Alright, as I speak with you right now, the Ashanti Regional Minister is into Galamsey” which were uttered by the 1st Defendant and republished on the 18 day of November 2025 by the 2nd and 3rd Defendants on the Facebook page of the 3rd Defendant, ALUTA 92.1 FM with the caption, “ASHANTI REGIONAL MINISTER IS DEEPLY INVOLVED IN ILLEGAL MINING (GALAMSEY)”-WENDELL YEBOAH, HEAD OF MOBILIZATION, DEMOCRACY HUB” are defamatory.

    b. An order directing the Defendants to retract the defamatory statements and publish an unqualified apology to the Plaintiff through the same platforms they used to make and republish the defamatory statements complained of by the Plaintiff.

    c. An order of the Honourable Court directing the Defendants to remove all earlier publications of the defamatory statements from their website, social media handles and in-house system recordings of the live radio programme.

    d. General damages for defamation.

    e. Exemplary damages of GHS10,000,000.00 (Ten Million Ghana Cedis) against the Defendants.

    f. An order of the Honourable Court in the nature of a perpetual injunction restraining the Defendants herein and their assigns from making any further publication/republication and/or causing to be printed, published/republished, distributed, and/or circulated any other similar defamatory words concerning the Plaintiff herein.
