The Chairman of the Ashanti chapter of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM), Frank Osei also known as Denero, has urged a halt to recent enforcement actions and a shift towards constructive dialogue.

His call follows a recent conflict in Bonteso between a police task force and local residents that led to the injury of several people and the arrest of four, including the assembly member.

He emphasized the need for collaboration and education to improve mining practices instead of using guns to attack Ghanaians.

“We acknowledge that there are shortcomings in how we operate, but the current approach of addressing these issues is not the best,” Chairman Denero stated during a visit to Bonteso. He pleaded with authorities to suspend all operations and engage in discussions with the miners. “In this regard, we should focus on education and ensure regular land reclamation after mining.

Osei stressed the GNASSM’s commitment to working collaboratively for the good of Ghana.

“We are always ready to come to the table because we all have a stake in Ghana’s future,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of responsible mining in creating opportunities for Ghanaian youth and preventing them from seeking dangerous alternatives abroad.

“It’s not right that Ghanaians are risking their lives in deserts and foreign lands. We are blessed with these natural resources, so let’s find a way to mine them responsibly,” he added.

Chairman Denero also expressed his strong disapproval of the methods used to address issues in the mining sector.

“It shouldn’t be about gun attacks. The solution lies in implementing effective policies that guide us towards responsible mining practices.” He expressed concern over the negative perception of Ghanaian miners.

“It’s unfair to single out and attack Ghanaian miners while protecting others. We are not criminals, and it’s worrying that we are being portrayed as such,” he concluded.
