The Achimota District Court has revoked the arrest warrant issued against Karen Baaba Sam by her ex-partner, Nana Kwadwo Adjei, amidst a legal battle over their daughter.
It is worth recalling that the court granted Nana Adjei partial custody of the child, but Karen refused to comply with the order and produce the child after a visit, which Nana Adjei claimed was a violation of the court’s decision.
Suspecting that Karen might be planning to travel out of the country with the child, Nana Adjei requested an injunction.
As a result, an order was issued to the CID, immigration, and Social Welfare to prevent her from taking the child abroad.
Soon after, the police issued a statement declaring Karen wanted as of January 20th, and pictures of her went viral on social media in accordance with the directives.
However, during the latest court hearing on February 4, 2025, Baaba Sam’s legal team argued that the warrant lacked merit and should be nullified.
They deemed the warrant invalid, arguing that it had been obtained through improper means by her ex-partner, Nana Kwadwo Adjei, with the help of certain members of the Ghana Police Service.
The state prosecutor did not object to the application.
Subsequently, the magistrate ruled in favour of Baaba Sam, lifting the warrant and allowing her to resume her normal activities without the threat of arrest.
Background
Karen Baaba Sam and her ex-partner, Nana Adjei of the East Legon Executive Club, welcomed their daughter, Ohemaa, in 2019.
The couple was never married, and after their relationship ended, the child stayed with Karen.
However, Nana Adjei’s quest for full custody of the child has since led to legal battles.
Karen’s side of the story
Karen shared her side of the story, claiming that her ex-partner, who has connections and a huge influence in society, has been using his power to make her life unbearable.
Recounting the beginning of their relationship, Karen said she met Nana Adjei in 2016, initially in a ‘godfather-goddaughter’ relationship.
Over time, their relationship grew, and they began dating.
Karen then became pregnant in 2018.
During her pregnancy, she alleged that Nana Adjei became violent.
One incident in December of that particular year was when he reportedly returned home late and drunk, leading to a confrontation.
Karen alleged that he physically assaulted her, and the intervention of a friend, Le-Roi, prevented further harm.
She claimed that Nana Adjei later apologised, blaming his actions on his intoxication, and she took him back.
After the birth of their child in 2019, Karen alleged that the abuse continued, and she reported one instance to the East Legon police after he allegedly gave her a black eye and several bruises.
However, the situation escalated further in 2023, when Karen allegedly discovered Nana Adjei with another woman at a restaurant.
During a confrontation, Nana allegedly threw Karen out of his car and allowed the other woman to sit in it.
When Karen returned home, she said Nana allegedly beat her again and even assaulted two of her relatives who tried to intervene.
In December 2023, Karen decided to break up with Nana Adjei.
He reportedly made threats, demanding that she should return all the items he had bought for her, including a Range Rover.
Karen eventually moved out of their shared home and began living elsewhere, but not long after, she was robbed of almost all her valuables.
She said she suspected that Nana Adjei may have been involved, especially since the robbers forgot to take a certain gold chain he had bought her.
Shortly afterward, he reportedly asked her to return the gold chain.
Weeks later, she said Nana Adjei requested to see their daughter, who was on break, and Karen agreed.
However, after hearing reports that Karen had found a new partner, Nana Adjei expressed dissatisfaction, claiming they had not broken up.
This led to more threats, including claims that Karen would never see their child again.
The custody battle intensified when Karen was unable to see her daughter for six weeks after the school break.
Tensions over access to the child
Per reports, a relative of Nana Adjei eventually contacted Karen, asking her to bring their daughter’s passport, as Nana intended to process travel documents for the child.
However, when Karen arrived with the passport, Nana failed to bring the child along as agreed.
When she later asked her aunt to take the passport to Nana’s house and bring back the child, the passport was taken and she was allegedly turned away.
Karen then sought protective custody through the circuit court.
Nana Adjei also responded by seeking to retain custody of the child at a district court.
Subsequently, the judge ruled that Nana Adjei could retain custody of the child till after the final judgment, granting Karen only four days out of a month to see her daughter.
Karen, upon her daughter’s first visit after the ruling, refused to let her return to Nana Adjei.
She explained that after every visit, her daughter always came back looking unwell.
Karen has since applied for a restraining order against Nana Adjei, but according to reports, he claims to have extensive knowledge of their movements, including her call history and travel details.
