Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo has blamed a dodgy croissant sandwich after he threw up on the sidelines during this week’s Peach Bowl.

But the 22-year-old claimed the disgusting act was the spark which allowed him to inspire a remarkable Sun Devils comeback against Texas.

Arizona State lost a 39-31 overtime thriller despite fourth-quarter heroics from Skattebo – who finished fifth in last month’s Heisman Trophy voting.

The running back threw one touchdown and ran for two more scores just minutes after ‘vomiting profusely’ on the bench.

On Thursday, Skattebo explained what caused his illness, telling the Dan Patrick Show: ‘I think I was drinking a little too much Powerade and water.

‘At the same time, I think I ate something bad in the morning. I had a croissant sandwich, and I don’t think it went down very well.

‘I wasn’t feeling good leading up to the game, until I threw up… I felt like a completely different person. After that, the game switched for me.’

Midway through the fourth quarter, Skattebo and Arizona finally managed to get their first touchdown on the board.

On fourth-and-2 from the Texas 42-yard line, Skattebo took a pitch and then threw a pass to Malik McClain.

The Sun Devils then secured the two-point conversion to claw the score to 24-16 with 6:31 remaining.

That wasn’t the end of his heroics. After an interception of Quinn Ewers, Skattebo caught a 62-yard pass from Sam Leavitt.

He then wrapped up the drive by punching he way into the endzone to cut the lead to 24–22 before tying the game by scoring the two-point conversion.

Skattebo also put his team ahead with a three-yard touchdown run to start overtime against No 4 Texas.

He finished with two rushing touchdowns and eight receptions for 99 yards.

However, the Sun Devils couldn’t hang on to pull off an upset over the Longhorns when an interception by Andrew Makuba finally ended a Peach Bowl quarterfinal classic in double overtime.

Arizona was on the verge of winning when Texas faced fourth-and-13 on its first overtime possession.

But Quinn Ewers found Matthew Golden breaking free behind two defenders to haul in a 28-yard touchdown.

After moving to the opposite end of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Ewers threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Helms on the very next play, followed by a two-point conversion pass to Golden.

The Longhorns finally put Arizona State (11-3) away when Makuba picked off Sam Leavitt’s pass at the 3 to end the game.
