Anthony Joshua (M) with his coach and friend

Two of Anthony Joshua’s close companions, his coach and a friend, have been confirmed dead following a tragic car accident in Ogun State, Nigeria, on Monday, December 29, 2025.

The fatal crash occurred on a busy highway in Makun, just hours after the trio reportedly spent time playing tennis together.

Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Ogun State Governor, confirmed the deaths in a statement.

“Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.

“Anthony Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were promptly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident, which the State considers a devastating loss.”

Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, was travelling in a convoy when the SUV he was in collided with a stationary vehicle.

Eyewitnesses described Joshua as shaken but conscious as he was helped out of the wreckage by his security team.
