Anthony Albanese will unveil Labor’s long-awaited migration crackdown on Thursday, as the government scrambles to regain control of one of the election‘s most potent political battlegrounds amid the surging popularity of Pauline Hanson‘s One Nation.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke will use a major address at the National Press Club to outline a suite of measures designed to tighten Australia’s migration system, following weeks of mounting pressure on Labor to respond to concerns about record population growth, housing shortages and strains on infrastructure.
The announcement comes after Labor delayed releasing its migration overhaul earlier this year, fuelling speculation about the scope of the changes and leaving a political vacuum that has been eagerly filled by both the Coalition and One Nation.
