Some Algerian players have been suspended for misconduct during the 2025 AFCON Some Algerian players have been suspended for misconduct during the 2025 AFCON

The Algerian Football Federation is preparing to take legal action against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over heavy sanctions imposed on them for indiscipline.

During Algeria’s defeat in the quarter-final game against Nigeria, some players and team officials engaged in a brawl that breached disciplinary codes.

In response, CAF’s Disciplinary Committee handed down financial penalties amounting to $100,000, alongside sporting sanctions targeting key members of the Algerian squad.

Goalkeeper Luca Zidane was suspended for two matches in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers while right-back Rafik Belghali received a four-match ban, with two of those games suspended.

The sanctions were met with strong opposition from the Algerian FA, who deemed the scale and substance of the penalties outrageous and harmful to the team’s competitiveness in the future.

As a result, the football association is planning to appeal the decision, seeking to have the financial fines and player bans overturned, arguing that the players were only expressing their displeasure.

The Algerians also stated that they will take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if the appeal fails.
