Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association, Alexander Kotey, has reiterated his commitment to introducing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in Ghana before the end of his tenure.

The adoption of VAR has transformed officiating in many leagues and international competitions, helping referees review key match incidents and reduce major errors. However, the technology is yet to be implemented in Ghana’s domestic competitions, where controversial decisions have frequently sparked debate among supporters and football stakeholders.

Competitions such as the Ghana Premier League and the Ghana Division One League have in recent years witnessed several contentious calls from match officials, prompting repeated calls for technological support.

Recently, Kurt Okraku publicly expressed concern about the standard of officiating in the domestic game and pledged that steps would be taken to improve refereeing performance.

Speaking in an interview with GFA media, Kotey stressed that technology would be central to the development of refereeing in the country.

He noted that introducing VAR within the next five years remains one of his key priorities.

Kotey also expressed hope that Ghana will eventually produce a referee capable of officiating the final of the FIFA World Cup Final, describing it as a historic target for the nation’s refereeing fraternity.
