Former sports minister Mustapha Ussif has disclosed that the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government built approximately 200 astro-turf projects across the country.

He claimed that in 2016, when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took over governance, there were only two astro-turfs in the country.

However, during Akufo-Addo’s eight-year tenure, the government invested in over 200 astro-turfs in various constituencies for sporting activities.

“We can all testify that before Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we had only two astro-turfs in the entire country. But after eight years, we can now count over 200,” Ussif said while speaking in Parliament on March 25, 2025.

The Member of Parliament for Yagaba/Kubori constituency advised President John Dramani Mahama to continue investing in sports infrastructure to promote recreation, which has been added to the sports ministry.

“If you’re going to have good recreation, these astro-turfs in our constituencies and districts will be key in promoting recreational activities,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Mahama has vowed to prioritize sporting infrastructure investment and rehabilitate stadiums in deplorable conditions nationwide.
