The National Executives of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) have officially thrown their support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, ahead of Ghana’s December 7, 2024, elections.

During a press briefing held in Accra on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, GFP Deputy General Secretary Jerry Offei Addo announced the unanimous decision, citing shared policy goals between the two parties.

Key among these are the NDC’s plans to establish a Women’s Development Bank, provide free tertiary education for able-bodied individuals, and implement a 24-hour economy — all of which align with the GFP’s emphasis on women’s advancement and empowering the underprivileged.

Joined by the party’s acting National Chairman, National Organizer, and National Youth Organizer, Mr. Offei Addo dismissed rumors suggesting that the endorsement was imposed or inconsistent with the legacy of the late Akua Donkor, GFP’s founder and former flagbearer. Despite her history of opposing Mahama, Offei Addo stressed that the move reflects the GFP’s commitment to policies that prioritize national progress and party ideals.

He also addressed speculation about potential external influence, firmly denying claims of inducements from the NDC.

“This decision was made purely in the interest of the nation and our supporters,” he asserted, adding that GFP members had already begun mobilizing on behalf of the NDC’s campaign.

This endorsement comes as a significant boost for the NDC, joining recent support from the People’s National Convention (PNC) and adding momentum to Mahama’s campaign as the election approaches.
