Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma North Constituency, has apologized profusely to the party’s National Council for disobeying its order to abstain from the recent parliamentary rerun in 19 polling centres.

Akua Afriyie admitted her mistake and reaffirmed her commitment to the party following a National Council meeting on Monday, July 14, to discuss planning for the party’s next annual delegates conference.

“All boils down to an apology, because that is my party and I will keep being NPP. We all make mistakes. If the party says you shouldn’t run, whatever it is, the matter has been resolved, an apology given, and we move on,” citinewsroom.com quoted her as saying.

She apologized after choosing to take part in the parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025, in defiance of a formal party order to abstain. The Electoral Commission (EC) decided to hold a rerun, but the NPP refused, claiming their candidate had already won the legislative election in December 2024.

During a press conference on Tuesday, July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong stated that the EC’s call for a rerun was an act of disobedience to the will of the people.

He maintained that Akua Afriyie, the party’s candidate, had legitimately won the first race and that EC officials and poll agents had verified all of the results.

Nonetheless, the Electoral Commission defended the rerun by pointing to anomalies in the collation procedure, including the lack of some Presiding Officers’ validation signatures on the scanned pink sheets from the affected polling centres.

Akua Afriyie cast her ballot in contravention of the NPP’s boycott order, however she lost by a slim margin to Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 34,090 votes to Afriyie’s 33,881 votes, giving the NDC a historic victory in the seat.
