Guinness World Record sing-a-thon contender Afua Asantewaa has clarified that her team informed her that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia donated GH¢20,000 to support her cause.
During an interview with Accra FM, Asantewaa stated that she did not receive any substantial gift from the then New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, except for medicine to soothe her sore throat, which was personally presented to her by Dr. Bawumia.
Her claim sparked controversy, prompting the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Salam Mustapha, to respond that the former NPP flagbearer had indeed given GH¢20,000 to support Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon.
Addressing the matter, Asantewaa stated that her team only informed her about Dr. Bawumia’s donation moments ago.
She explained that the money was not given to her directly, and she does not know who on her team received it.
“It was this evening that my team told me about Dr. Bawumia’s GH¢20,000 donation. I cannot say who received the money, and they are not telling me. Some claim my husband took it, but I am unaware of that.
“Nana Reagan and Socrate say the money was meant for the boys, so I don’t know why I am being associated with it. Dr. Bawumia personally gave me the medicine. But I want to clarify that I did not receive the money. People refuse to acknowledge the truth, but I am being honest and not ungrateful,” she explained during United Showbiz on UTV on March 15, 2025.
