Acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, is not certain the Accra Sports Stadium will be ready to host Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia.
The match could be moved to the Essipong Stadium in the Sekondi-Takoradi area, with the NSA seeking a review and approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to use the venue.
The Accra Sports Stadium remains the only venue approved by CAF for the fixture, but concerns remain over whether the required work, particularly on the floodlights, can be completed in time.
“For the floodlight, I am not too sure because the kind of work that it is required, I am not too sure we can do it in two weeks,” Sarpong told CitiSports.
“We were trying to see if we could play one of them, especially the home match for Somalia at the Essipong Sports Stadium. It will be their home game. So it will really not affect us, so that at least Accra Sports Stadium will also have time to breathe,” he added.
The possible relocation comes after the Essipong Stadium returned to competitive football on 13 October, hosting an Olympic qualifier between Ghana’s Black Queens and Mauritius.
It was the stadium’s first competitive game in seven years, with the Black Queens putting seven against Mauritius.
Ghana are scheduled to face Somalia on 11 November, with the return leg set to take place four days later.
