    By Boxing Bob Newman

Back on January 31 of this year, Austin “Ammo” Williams saw his chance at the WBC middleweight title disappear suddenly as champion Carlos Adames withdrew at the last second after falling ill due to severe dehydration from his weight-cutting process.

On that night, Williams fought late substitute Wendy Toussaint, winning easily. That victory, however, was not the one Williams was looking for.

The fight was rescheduled for tonight, March 21, at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida. Adames made weight this time with no issues. After a first round that Williams may have edged, a double right hand by Adames dropped Williams partway through round two. Williams beat the count and went back to his corner as if nothing had happened.

Adames maintained his dominance over the next three rounds. In round six, both fighters drew cheers from the crowd as they stood toe-to-toe—the first such action in the fight. In rounds seven, eight, and nine, Adames again resumed control, coming forward with steady offense.

In round ten, Williams came out firing, pressing Adames and exciting the fans once again. However, he couldn’t sustain that effort, and the rest of the round evened out, although Williams landed another hard left just before the bell.

Halfway through round eleven, Williams had his mouthpiece knocked out courtesy of an Adames right hand. Williams went for broke in the final round, coming out aggressively and giving it his all. Adames was deducted a point for a low blow, but it was academic, as the judges scored it 118-108 and 117-109 twice, all for Adames, now 25-1-1, 18 KOs. Williams showed guts, but it wasn’t enough, as he falls to 20-2, 13 KOs.

As far as his future goes, Adames didn’t call out any names in particular but said he could face anyone from 154 to 168 pounds. For his part, Williams credited Adames on the victory and said he will get back into the gym and prepare for another title opportunity in the future.
