The Executive Secretary of Anchoring Democracy Advocacy Movement Ghana (ADAM-GH), Azubila Salam Emmanuel, has announced that his organization has filed a case at the Supreme Court challenging President John Mahama’s alleged intention to seek a third term in office.

The suit, numbered J1/4/2026, seeks a declaration that a president’s term is four years and that no person can be elected president for more than two terms, consecutive or otherwise.

According to Azubila, the move is aimed at preventing unnecessary commentary and tension in the country, and those making statements about a third term risk facing contempt charges.

The case is based on Articles 2(1) and 130(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Rule 45(1) and (2) of the Supreme Court Rules.

The controversy surrounding President Mahama’s potential third-term bid has been ongoing, with some accusing him of attempting to pack the Supreme Court with loyalists to pave the way for a third term.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has been vocal in his criticism of the President’s alleged plans.

Would you like to know more about the implications of this suit or the reactions of various stakeholders.
