Veteran Kumawood actress Mavis Yeboah, popularly known as Maame Gyanwaa, has made an emotional appeal for financial assistance as she continues to undergo treatment for a serious eye condition that has severely affected her vision.

The actress, who has reportedly been battling retinal artery occlusion, opened up about her health and financial struggles in a video from a recent interview shared on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Maame Gyanwaa explained that the cost of her treatment has become increasingly difficult to manage, with her medical care requiring approximately GH¢6,000 every month.

‘My Children Can No Longer Afford It’

According to the actress, her children have been supporting her financially throughout her treatment, but they have now reached a point where they can no longer comfortably meet the rising expenses.

She explained that her current financial difficulties should not be attributed to irresponsible spending during her active years in the Ghanaian movie industry.

Maame Gyanwaa said she worked hard during her career but circumstances changed unexpectedly, leaving her to deal with serious health challenges while also struggling to finance the treatment needed to manage her condition.

She Has Lost Sight in One Eye

The veteran actress had previously spoken about her health condition in July 2026, when she revealed that she had completely lost sight in one of her eyes.

At the time, she disclosed that she was spending about GH¢6,000 every month on treatment aimed at protecting the vision in her remaining eye.

She also revealed that her eye problems had persisted for several years and that she had sought medical attention from various health facilities in an effort to find effective treatment.

Her latest appeal suggests that the financial burden of maintaining her treatment has now become a major concern for her and her family.

Appeal to Ibrahim Mahama and Government

In her latest plea, Maame Gyanwaa specifically appealed to businessman Ibrahim Mahama to come to her assistance during what she described as a difficult period in her life.

She also called on the government to support her with the cost of her ongoing medical treatment.

The actress’s renewed appeal has brought fresh attention to the challenges faced by some veteran Ghanaian actors who, after spending years contributing to the local film industry, may struggle to meet their healthcare and financial needs later in life.

For Maame Gyanwaa, the immediate concern is preserving the sight she has left.

With her family reportedly finding it increasingly difficult to raise the approximately GH¢6,000 required for her treatment each month, the veteran actress is appealing to well-meaning individuals, organisations and the government to come to her aid.

Her plea has also sparked renewed conversations about the need for stronger welfare and support systems for ageing entertainers who dedicated significant portions of their lives to Ghana’s creative industry.
