Ghanaian actress and newly elected Member of Parliament for Tema Central, Ebi Bright, has opened up about the challenges she faced on her path to political success.

Ebi, a seasoned career diplomat and development communicator, revealed that her aspirations were often dismissed during her campaigns, with critics ridiculing her background in the arts.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, she shared how some people doubted her capabilities, claiming politics was not a place for someone with her “Cantata” background—a reference to her acting career.

“I was told point-blank that politics is not for ‘Cantata’ people like me,” she recounted. “I remember one man saying, ‘Does this girl think politics is the Cantata she acts in?’ These comments reflect how creatives are often marginalized, but my win will inspire many in the arts to pursue their political ambitions.”

Ebi’s victory in the 2024 elections marks her third attempt at the Tema Central seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), having first vied for Parliament in 2012 under a different party. Her perseverance paid off as she secured a seat traditionally viewed as a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“I’ve always believed there are no barriers to the pursuit of my goals,” Ebi said. “Winning Tema Central, a seat long considered safe for the NPP, is a testament to breaking the odds. I’m thrilled to represent my constituents in the next Parliament.”

Ebi also reflected on the broader impact of her political journey, expressing pride in how her initial attempts ignited a spark among her colleagues in the creative industry to consider politics.
