AC Milan will once again celebrate Mother’s Day in a deeply personal and symbolic way, as players from the men’s first team take to the pitch wearing their mothers’ maiden names on the backs of their jerseys, continuing a heartwarming tradition first introduced last season.

The initiative, which was a first in Italian football when launched in 2023, is being carried forward this weekend during Milan’s Serie A clash against Bologna on Friday, May 9, 2025.

The gesture is not only a tribute to motherhood, but also a broader celebration of personal identity and equality, inspired by an Italian law passed in 2022 that gives both parents equal rights to pass on their surnames to their children.

In last year’s edition, the Rossoneri marked the occasion in style with a 5-1 win over Cagliari, and the gesture captured widespread attention and praise across the football world. For 2024, the club is going even further.

This season’s celebration will see players’ maternal surnames not just on their jerseys, but also featured in the official lineup announcement, shown on the San Siro’s giant screens, and read aloud by the stadium announcer.

The club will also display Mother’s Day-themed graphics across its digital platforms and LED displays, including images of mothers shared by players, club legends, and fans globally.

Beyond the emotional symbolism, AC Milan is also using the occasion to make a tangible social impact. Through its charitable arm, Fondazione Milan, the club will support around 70 teenage mothers via a fundraising campaign.

The proceeds will go to a parenting support programme at the Spazio Indifesa Hub in Milan’s Gallaratese district.
