In light of Alabaster Box’s accusations against Medikal for sampling parts of their song in his new track, the group’s manager, Albert Kittoe, has expressed concern over Ghanaians’ lackadaisical attitude toward copyright issues.

In an interview with Hitz FM on April 10, 2025, Kittoe emphasised that the group’s works are internationally registered and hold strong legal standing.

He further clarified that Medikal’s team should engage their lawyers directly, rather than addressing the issue publicly.

“There is a legal representation. The lawyer has written to the team, so the team needs to write back to the lawyer. And I think one of the things that, in my experience within the industry, is the fact that a lot of us don’t take copyright seriously. This situation is even heightened because Alabaster Box, all their music is being registered internationally.

“And for that reason, even if we want to take the case up anywhere in any jurisdiction, we have the right to do so because I have personally registered all their songs internationally to make sure their copyright and intellectual property are properly protected,” he said.

The legal notice also warned of further action, including injunctions, damages, and legal costs, if Medikal fails to comply.

    Background

The group accused Medikal of illegally sampling their popular song “Akwabaa” in his latest single, “Welcome to Africa”.

In a writ of summons dated April 8, 2025, and signed by Sustineri Attorneys, Alabaster Box claimed that the first 10 seconds of Medikal’s song contain their intellectual property without permission.

    Demands

The group is demanding an immediate removal of the song from all streaming and distribution platforms, a full account of all revenue generated from the song, and a cessation of any promotion, performance, or sale of the track.

Kittoe added that the public accusation and their demands were mainly for educational purposes, stating, “At the end of the day, you cannot just use someone’s intellectual property, and without any conversation, until we’ve had that proper conversation, we are still holding on to that demand. So it’s up to the team to have come forward and had the conversation so we know where things could be. But until then, these demands hold for educational purposes.”
