The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that midfielder Francis Abu is in stable condition after suffering a horrific injury during the Black Stars’ 2-0 friendly defeat to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup on Friday November 14, 2025.

Abu was fouled by Tanaka Ao early in the second half and received immediate medical attention before being rushed to Toyota Memorial Hospital.

According to the GFA, the Black Stars medical team, led by Dr Prince Pambo, has been working closely with the Toulouse FC doctor and specialists at the hospital.

After a series of detailed assessments, all parties have agreed on the appropriate management plan for the midfielder as preparations begin for surgery and long-term recovery.

The Association expressed gratitude to the public for the widespread support shown to the player since the incident.

“The Ghana Football Association wishes to thank Ghanaians for their support and outpouring of solidarity during this unfortunate incident,” the statement said.

Further updates on Abu’s surgery and rehabilitation plan will be communicated in the coming hours.

The GFA added that it wishes Francis Abu a full and speedy recovery.
