Brazilian footballer, Wanderson Brandão de Sousa has died after being accidentally shot by his younger brother.

According to reports from Brazil, the 16-year-old brother was cleaning a gun when he mistakenly pulled the trigger, and the bullet struck Wanderson in the neck.

The 18-year-old reportedly died on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the family home in Aragoiânia, in the central Brazilian state of Goiás.

The younger brother has yet to be interrogated by police, but the weapon involved in the incident has been retrieved by security officials to aid the investigation.

Investigators are focusing on how the stray bullet from the rifle struck Wanderson’s neck and led to his death.

Reacting to the news, local resident José Guapo wrote on social media: “The town of Aragoiânia is in shock following the death of under-20 player Wanderson, who died after being hit by a bullet from a rifle. The gun was fired accidentally by his 16-year-old brother. Wanderson was considered a promising athlete and had started playing for Aragoiânia’s senior team.”

Tributes have been pouring in for Wanderson, who played as a left-back for Aragoiânia FC.

The club paid tribute to the player, saying: “Wanderson Brandão de Sousa. Our condolences to family and friends. May God console all our hearts.”

Following the tragic incident, Aragoiânia sports director Silvan Rodrigues Castro has suspended all team activities as they mourn and make plans for the player’s burial.
