As Ghana’s political scene begins to take shape ahead of the 2028 general elections, former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Akwasi Opong-Fosu, is emerging as a potential key figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Although he has not made an official declaration, strong signals from the party’s regional executives, diaspora chapters, and intellectual networks indicate that discussions about his possible presidential bid are gaining traction.

If he chooses to enter the race, sources close to his camp say his campaign will likely be anchored on three central pillars — Ethical Leadership, Institutional Renewal, and Inclusive Transformation.

Supporters of Opong-Fosu believe his leadership would both consolidate and extend former President John Mahama’s legacy, positioning the NDC as a party of continuity and reform.

Having served loyally under President Mahama and contributed significantly to the 2024 NDC Manifesto, Opong-Fosu is regarded as a figure capable of deepening institutional reform while advancing Mahama’s vision of inclusive national development.

Political observers argue that if the NDC seeks renewal and moral rejuvenation, Opong-Fosu’s emergence could offer the party a credible path forward.

His four-decade career in public service, beginning in local government, reflects extensive experience in governance and policy implementation.

He was instrumental in developing and operationalising Ghana’s District Assembly system, which has been central to decentralisation and local development for decades.

Born to parents from both the Western and Ashanti Regions, Opong-Fosu’s diverse background and national appeal have earned him a reputation as a unifying figure who can bridge Ghana’s political and regional divides.

His strong international reputation, bolstered by years of participation in African and global governance platforms, also connects him to networks of investors and policy experts dedicated to Africa’s development agenda.

Within the NDC, his supporters describe him as a standard-bearer for ethical renewal, citing his commitment to probity, accountability, and service to the nation.

His 18-year tenure as District Secretary and District Chief Executive prepared him for higher responsibilities, including his leadership roles as President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), President of the African Union of Local Authorities, Vice President of the International Union of Local Authorities, and UN Special Advisor on Local Authorities.

Later, as Head of the Local Government Service and Minister for Local Government, Opong-Fosu earned respect for his technical competence, integrity, and results-oriented leadership.

As the NDC looks toward the next chapter of its political journey, many within the party see Akwasi Opong-Fosu as a potential “renewal candidate” — one capable of restoring faith in governance, rebuilding institutions, and reigniting national optimism
