The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin, is urging the government to present before Parliament a recent agreement with the United States that allows the deportation of Ghanaian nationals.

He explained that the agreement, which came to light during the parliamentary recess, involves the repatriation of Ghanaians from the United States but has not yet been brought to Parliament for approval.

Mr. Afenyo Markin argued that the arrangement carries serious national implications and must therefore be subjected to parliamentary scrutiny as required under Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution.

He maintained that all international agreements signed on behalf of Ghana must reflect the country’s values and protect its sovereignty.

The Minority Leader warned that no government should enter into deals that affect citizens’ rights without public accountability.

He stressed that Ghana’s foreign policy must be conducted transparently and in line with democratic principles.

He called on the government to respect constitutional processes and allow Parliament to debate and ratify the deportee agreement to ensure that the rights of Ghanaians abroad are safeguarded.

Mr. Afenyo Markin reaffirmed the Minority’s commitment to holding the government accountable on matters of national interest, especially those involving Ghana’s image and international relations.
