Popular Ghanaian comedian and skit maker, Abdul Waris Umaru, popularly known as Comedian Waris, has stated that skit makers are currently having a greater impact on society than musicians.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Dadzie on October 11, 2025, Waris mentioned that while music entertains, comedy skits have become a daily source of joy and connection for many Ghanaians, especially the youth.

According to him, comedy and short-form content creators are influencing a wider audience, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok.

“I think skit makers are making more impact than even music. I don’t think anybody laughs at music. When you laugh at music, you’re mad, right?” he said humorously.

Comedian Waris explained that a large percentage of Ghanaian youth turn to TikTok for laughter and entertainment before bed, not music.

There’s no division in the comedy industry – Comedian Waris

“I can tell you confidently that 80% of the youth in Ghana, before they sleep, everyone will be on TikTok looking for something to laugh about and not music to sleep with,” he shared.

He emphasised that the growing popularity and massive followings of content creators prove the strength of the comedy and skit industry.

“Obviously, looking at the number of followers some creators have is mind-blowing. I would say content creation has gotten to a point where even older women watch and laugh. They keep sharing, but they wouldn’t share music, so you should know that content creation is really moving,” he added.
