The Grammy season is here again, and this time, the Ghana music industry is not letting this opportunity slide.
Musicians like Shatta Wale, Epixode and Black Sherif have announced their songs are being considered for categories at the 68th Grammy Awards in 2026.
Recently, music executive Richie Mensah announced that he had been accepted as a Voting Academy Member.
Additionally, Lady Dentaa Amoateng, a consultant to Grammy Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., has advised Ghanaian musicians and producers to become members of the Recording Academy, a move she believes will greatly improve the country’s chances of securing Grammy wins.
‘Ghana’s Grammy chances depend on more of us joining the academy’ – Dentaa
But what does it mean to become a Grammy Academy member? What is involved in it, and what are the benefits?
The Grammy Academy
The Academy unites and supports all kinds of music professionals, from artistes and producers to educators and executives.
It works to preserve and celebrate musical heritage, promote advocacy, and support creators through initiatives like GRAMMY Museum and MusiCares.
What does it mean to be a member?
Being a Recording (GRAMMY) Academy member means you are part of a community of recognised ‘music professionals’ who contribute to the culture, business, and creative aspects of the music industry, and you have the opportunity to participate in the Grammy Awards process and other industry initiatives.
Here’s what one stands to gain
1. Recognition & Credibility
Membership shows that you are a credible, active professional in the music industry (such as an artist, songwriter, producer, engineer, label executive, or educator).
The Academy vets all applicants to confirm they have a proven track record of musical contributions.
2. Grammy Participation
Voting Members can vote on who gets nominated and who wins in the GRAMMY Awards, this is a major responsibility and honor in the music business.
Professional Members don’t vote but can still take part in industry discussions, education, and advocacy.
Grammy U Members are students who are pursuing careers in music and want to learn and connect.
3. Networking & Education
Members gain access to industry events, panels, workshops, and mentorships, plus the chance to connect with other music professionals.
4. Impact & Legacy
As a member, you’re part of shaping the future of the music industry and protecting its integrity, culture, and creative standards.
