    • Error from halfback was crucial in golden point extra time
    • Gave the North Queensland Cowboys field position
    • Johnathan Thurston landed match-sealing field goal

By ANDREW PRENTICE, SPORT REPORTER, AUSTRALIA

    Published: 21:12 EDT, 3 October 2025 | Updated: 02:05 EDT, 5 October 2025

NRL legend Allan Langer is renowned for his sense of humour – and now it can revealed the champion halfback delivered a sledge for the ages the day after Ben Hunt’s infamous knock on in the 2015 NRL Grand Final.

Hunt wanted to crawl into a hole after virtually handing North Queensland the premiership in golden point extra time – and the next day ‘Alfie’ decided to break the ice in typical fashion.

As the shattered Broncos players were about to board the the team bus, Langer was handing out cans of beer from an esky.

He threw one in Hunt’s direction, who of course, dropped it.

‘Oh, mate…two in two days,’ Langer, at the time a Brisbane trainer, quipped.

It was a brutal one-liner, but was well received by the playing group, including Hunt.

Fast forward to 2025 and Hunt is seeking redemption at the same venue, Accor Stadium in Sydney.

Hunt, 35, admits he endured some dark days after losing the all-Queensland decider, and would love a premiership ring on his finger.

‘Winning (a title) would definitely seal it all,’ the veteran said. ‘I’ve achieved a lot in my career, but that’s one that you really want.’

Broncos great Steve Renouf has no doubt Hunt can seize his moment.

‘If he comes out a winner, that’s the icing on the cake,’ he told Fox Sports.

‘As a club, we’ve gone down in our last two (Grand Finals).

‘I am pretty confident this is the opportunity (they will take).’

According to TAB, Melbourne Storm are $1.70 favourites, with Brisbane $2.15 outsiders.

For those who enjoy a nostalgic bet, Hunt is a $17 chance to win the Clive Churchill Medal for player of the Grand Final.

Storm five-eighth Cameron Munster is the $6.50 favourite, with Broncos fullback Reece Walsh and Melbourne hooker Harry Grant both $7.00 chances.

Kick-off is 7.30pm AEDT on Sunday night.
